Hallstatt :: Fairytale magic or tourist trap?
Hallstatt, Austria is undeniably one of Europe’s most beautiful alpine villages, where pastel-colored houses cling dramatically to the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif. The village mirrors flawlessly onto the glassy surface of the Hallstätter See, a deep basin carved out by massive glaciers during the last Ice Age and filled with pristine meltwater.
Yet, this fairytale aesthetic has made it a global poster child for overtourism, with narrow cobblestone alleys frequently bottlenecked by thousands of daily tour-bus visitors.
Despite the dense crowds, Hallstatt still remains well worth the visit (we arrived early to find parking and hopefully enjoy the area before the tour buses arrived); the sheer natural majesty and ancient history possess a mystical charm that pairs perfectly with a quiet lakeside café where you can sit back and enjoy a warm, traditional Austrian apple strudel.
Unfortunately, the views during our visit weren’t the best due to the high humidity, but it was still a lovely stopover on our Alps road trip from Salzburg to Slovenia.
